Tom LAMONT
About Tom Lamont

Tom Lamont, Canadian Wildlife Carver & Sculptor

Tom Lamont developed his love for wildlife while working as a Forest Service Fire-Spotter in the northern reaches of British Columbia, Canada. The long, lonely hours reached his inner depths and brought forth his artistic eye.

His strong desire to create an outlet for his love of nature and respect for her animals, led him to explore the art of carving. He began carving with mediums of natural wood and nature's leavings, such as moose antlers, which he collected from those dropped naturally by live animals and trees.  Later his mediums expanded to include soapstone from Brazil, individually selected, and alabaster from Spain.

These raw materials speak to how Tom will utilize them.  He ‘sees’ a vision in the raw material's structure and shape.  From this vision, and in combination with his artistic eye, a subject emerges taking on a variety of style, poise and depth. No matter what creature is sculpted, Tom brings out its personality.   His skill in this aspect has brought him recognition especially when carving Bears. From Polar Bear to Brown Bear each one has its own, almost whimsical persona. His whales and ocean creatures depict grace and serenity. Tom's frog carvings allow the viewer to recognize the hidden world of these often forgotten creatures!

Tom is located in the Qualicum Beach area of Vancouver Island.

Tom is a very private individual, centered by his four loves: carving, his partner Kali, his daughters and fly-fishing! He is happiest when choosing a new medium, visualizing the sculpture within and bringing it forth. Tom’s five daughters all live on the Islands or in the Okanagan Valley.
