John
Joy
John Joy believes that if you cannot draw…you
cannot paint. Drawing is John’s first passion and leads
the way in his creation of his “back-alley architecture”. Though
he has traveled throughout Canada, the Northern Arctic, Europe
and Asia, John’s favorite subject matter is the backyards
of Toronto’s old neighbourhoods. John focuses
on painting the personality of a house, which he feels is most
accurately portrayed from the backside. The back of the
house provides more shape and character, than the pristine front
that the home owner wants to portray to the public.
Born in 1925, John Joy is one of the few artists today who devotes
himself to painting on location, capturing our great Canadian landscape. By
painting on location, he is able to capture the subtle variations
of light in his watercolours and acrylics.
As a founding member of the Society of Canadian Artists and an
active member of the Toronto Arts & Letters Club, John exhibits his paintings in numerous
private and public collections as well as with the Canadian Society of Painters
in Watercolour.
John’s work may be found among a long list of private, public and corporate
collections such as; I.B.M., Shell Oil and the University of Toronto.
Art of the Matter is proud to exhibit John Joy’s
paintings.
