MOULDINGS
Custom framing is much more than four pieces of wood surrounding a piece of art. Custom framing are like fine furniture for your art. A great frame can make a work of art a masterpiece, but it should never take away from the art itself. With over 2,000 moulding samples to select from, Art of the Matter provides a high quality selection of frames, in an unsurpassed variety of styles and finishes. We partner with exceptional moulding manufacturers, including Fotiou and Larson Juhl to bring you the very latest in selection and trends as well as timeless classics.
MAT BOARDS
When mats were first invented, they had two core functions. One was to provide an area for visual relief so the art could be viewed without the distraction of the nearby surroundings. Secondly, the depth of the mat also serves as a spacer to keep the glass from touching the face of the art. In the past few decades, mats have taken on a more decorative role. Since mats are now available in many colours, patterns and textures, they are used to match colours in the art and to coordinate with the room décor.
Mat borders are also an important consideration. It is best to avoid having mat borders the same width as the frame surrounding them. Generally it will look best if the mat is somewhat wider than the frame. Too narrow of a border can bring down the perceived value of the art and it tends to look crowded in the frame.
Types of Mats:
Paper Mat
The lowest quality of mat. It is more susceptible to discoloration and it can accelerate the deterioration of the art.
Acid-Free Mats
The mats called acid-free have been purified to neutralize the acidity. Although this is good, this type of mat is not a substitute for rag or alpha-cellulose mats when you want to adhere to conservation standards.
Rag Mat
The mat looks like paper but it was made from cotton fibres. Rag mats are recommended when you want to preserve art.
GLAZING
Glazing is just a generic term which refers to the covering of art and mats with glass or acrylic. We offer a wide selection of glazing options, which includes clear regular, non-glare, conservation UV, museum glass and scratch-resistant Acrylite, both UV coated and clear. UV protective glass helps to prevent
the damage caused by exposure to UV rays. It is available in various finishes, and will enhance the clarity and reduce reflection of your framed piece.
